Daxton Bloomquist- From El Dorado to Broadway

Daxton Bloomquist

Since graduating from El Dorado High School in 2006, Daxton Bloomquist has had an eventful journey, complete with twists, turns, lows, and finally the highest highs, performing in the hit show Book of Mormon, now on Broadway in New York City.

After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater from WSU in 2010, Dax had regional success performing with Music Theatre of Wichita, Starlight Theater in Kansas City, and others. He made the leap to New York City, where he spent a year auditioning…. with no work, other than three “awful” jobs.

Finally he got his first big job offer with Disney Cruise Line, cast as Hercules in the Disney Fantasy Show. He was hired as a singer/dancer, opening the brand new ship with the cast and crew. They spent seven months on the water, working as many as 70 hours per week in a physically demanding job.

“It was a great experience, and I got to work with great people- choreographers and directors who taught me a great deal,” Bloomquist related.

Dax returned to New York in September of 2011, where he was hired for a position in Hello Dolly at the Ford Theater by one of the choreographers he met on the ship.

In 2012 he auditioned for the Book of Mormon, and was hired as the swing to cover the parts of all of the ensemble boys. A swing is a member of the company who understudies chorus or dancing roles. Originally hired to start in March, he was called in January of 2013 to begin the part in only four days.

Dax replaced one position full time for seven months due to the illness of another actor, on stage nightly while still rehearsing the other parts.

“I was exhausted, but happy.”

To date Bloomquist has performed four different roles in Book of Mormon on Broadway, working with 90% of the original cast, including Trey Parker and Matt Stone. He performed another role in the production for five weeks in Chicago in 2013.

“I am happy to be from El Dorado- it’s a great place to grow up. I would like to give a shout out to Katie Banks Todd for being a huge inspiration to me,” said Bloomquist.

After a holiday break in El Dorado, visiting his mother Rebecca Shum, Dax will return to Broadway in February. We wish him the best of luck in landing his next leading role!
