You bring the eats. We bring the beats!

Are you free over lunch on Tuesday, May 15, from noon to 1:00 p.m.? Bring your lunch and join us in welcoming back special guest, jazz pianist, Emily Strom!

Strom, raised in a musical family, trained at an early age to sing and play piano, discovered her need to pursue jazz in college. She considers one of her greatest creative productions to date to be composing a piece for, and conducting, the 2008 Wichita State University Jazz Arts big band at the Wichita Jazz Festival. Within the same year, Strom won the title Miss Kansas, as well as taking both the Margene Savage Memorial Top Vocalist Award and the Debra Dene Barnes Outstanding Instrumentalist Scholarship for singing and playing jazz piano. After spending a year traveling the country as Miss Kansas, Strom went back to WSU, graduating with a jazz piano degree.

After graduation, Strom took a couple years to explore a television career, but decided music was where her heart had been all along. Her debut release, Waltz in the Dark, was a ten song exploration of an artist wedding those two influences and even borrowing from some rock bands that have inspired her along the way.

Here is a quote based on a review by a blogger known as “brockbanvard46187” at F5paper.com:
“Strom’s album Waltz in the Dark, sounds like a movie soundtrack starring a nightclub singer donned in a gown, under low light and behind a shiny black grand piano. The main character is often contemplating romance. In songs such as "Of All the Boys," the character finds love realized and further supported in the following track, "Valentine's Day Sucked." The vibe is like a sequel to a romantic comedy where the couple is existing in the happily ever after, a story not often told. There are some more content-dense songs on Waltz in the Dark including "Help" followed by "Lost," a piece that opens in an odd meter and embraces darker melodies. And of course, as the title track would suggest, there are waltzes. Waltz in the Dark is like sipping a fine cabernet but for your ears. Strom understands her palette and how best to utilize her talents”.

The Brown Bag Concert Series offers shows from local, regional, and/or independent artists for free to the public over lunch on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. The Coutts Museum of Art is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit institution dedicated to supporting art and art education in the community, the region, and to its visitors.
